What is DIR Floortime?
DIR Floortime is a therapeutic approach designed to support children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, such as Autism.
The "D" stands for Development: The DIR approach emphasizes the child's individual developmental level (FEDCs or Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities) and focuses on supporting their progress through developmental milestones.
The "I" stands for Individual Differences: the approach recognizes that each child has unique strengths, challenges, and processing differences.
The "R" stands for Relationship: the approach emphasizes building a strong and supportive relationship between the child and their caregiver.
How it Works: During sessions, I use a play-based and child-led approach to follow the child's natural interests in play in order to organically support their joint attention, engagement with the adult, and expand their circles of communication (back and forth reciprocity). From there we can work on other skills such as problem solving together, communication skills, and emotional regulation (e.g. frustration tolerance). We will incoroprate sensory and motor activities based on the child's individual needs and preferences to support their overall development as well.
Benefits: Improved social and emotional skills, enhanced communication and interaction, increased self-regulation and attention, fostered sense of security and attachment, and enhanced cognitive and developmental abilities.

2.  Email & Forms
I will then send you a follow-up email  including  a brief summary of what was discussed, upcoming availability for our first session, and any Onboarding Paperwork (Parent Interview form, Payment Agreement, New Client Contract).  The forms must be completed before our first scheduled session, so keep that in mind when scheduling. The Parent Interview Form will include questions regarding specific goals you have in mind, as well as your child's strengths, interests, sensory processing, social/emotional development, current challenges, and developmental history.  This will support my understanding of your child as a whole, and to support the tailoring of our Interactions and Sessions when your child and I meet.
3. DIR Floortime Play Session (45 minutes)
These sessions will be up to 45 minutes long, and will be completely individualized and tailored to your child's interactive style and preferences.  I will utilize the information given to me from the Parent Interview form to tailor my interaction style in a play session with your child. Using a child-led approach, I will then assess their FEDCs (Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities) during that session, as well as work to stretch their current capacities. Areas of focus often include: joint attention, engagement, back and forth reciprocity, emotional regulation, communication, and overall social-emotional development.
4. Assessment & Consultation
I will then analyze the child's FEDCs and provide a short analysis of what I saw, which will be emailed to you after the session, within 24 hours. This will include a brief summary of what I noticed about their overall developmental profile, what strategies I used to support and stretch their FEDCs during our session, as well as recommendations for further support  and follow-up of their overall development.  I will include upcoming availability for follow-up sessions, as well.
